Karate Belts, Uniforms, and Supplies
Karate
is an ancient sport that was originally developed in China. The sport
came about because of the Ming dynasty’s “Policy of Banning
Weapons.” This led the people in the villages to develop a hand
to hand system of combat for protection from invaders.
Today Karate is practiced
as either a sport, combat sport, or for self defense. The training is
divided into three areas: fundamentals, form, and sparring. The World
Karate Federation holds competitions in form and sparring, leaving the
fundamentals to the individual dojos. There are many things one should
consider before taking up the sport and learning about the equipment
and supplies needed is a good way to start.
Karate Belts

karate belts. These belts are different colors depending on your skill
level. Beginners start with a white belt. The belts go through a full
spectrum of colors with black for the experts.
Karate Uniforms
Karate uniforms are simple and are designed to allow for easy movement;
loose pants for easy kicking, large shirts that allow the arms to move
freely. The shirts usually fold over because of their length and are
secured in place with the belt. Remember that the color of the belt
also identifies skill level. Both the shirt and pants are typically
white.
Karate Gear
There is not much gear involved in the sport of karate. In some dojos
you will find some hojo undo, which is simple equipment made of wood
or stone such as a wooden striking post. When learning fundamentals,
equipment is not used. In some competitions bow staffs may be used in
the advanced levels.

the varying forms each area practiced. In the United States there are

discipline and confidence at a very young age. The main differences
between any styles of karate will be the teaching techniques. Every

If any supplies are required it will be safety equipment. These items
are usually meant purely for protection and will affect the performance
of the student. Gloves may be used to protect hands, shin guards and
helmets may also be used.

Instructional karate videos are a great way to familiarize a student
with the sport before diving into a sport that may not be suitable for
them. Videos can also help students improve their form and solidify
the fundamentals. Movies made in Hollywood are often unrealistic and
over romanticize the sport. To get a realistic impression of the sport
instructional videos are best.
